Here in American Samoa our students definitely listen to mainland music, but they still love their Samoan music too. Samoan music is heard just as commonly on our kids cell phones (which they use to play music while walking around campus) as the newest R&B song from the states. Samoan music truly has it's own flavor, and can at times be a very acquired taste. However one new song is getting very popular, even with us palagis as it has a more mainland sound.
I recently got the video (thanks Jessie!) from YouTube to show in class and lo and behold it was filmed on our own little Tutuila and I can identify most of the shooting locations. With a little help from Jessie of course. The chorus goes "Pretty lil teine. Seki a o'e" which translates to "Pretty lil girl, you're the coolest"
While not necessarily the deepest lyrics it sounds way cool in Samoan and I bet you will have it stuck in your head. Check it out!
When I first saw the video I thought that the main girl looked familiar. Turns out we met her earlier in the month when we went to Fagatele Bay. She was with the college group that gave us a ride, and we rode with her in the back of a truck. Small world, or in this case, island.
