The hours before class actually start on Monday mornings are some of the most depressing I experience on Island. I’m tired, wish it was still the weekend, and the kids are usually pretty grumpy themselves. Occasionally on Mondays when we waltz into the office we are delighted to find that there is a morning assembly! These are always much appreciated by the staff and students because they result in a shortened class schedule and sometimes they also eat up all of first period. Today’s was a concert from the Pacific Division of the Marine’s Band. It was quite the show with the walking brass band walking through the kids while playing some tunes, and then a full band on stage. As this is AmSam things were not quite like concerts in the states. For one of the songs a couple of the guys in the band were serenading a girl from the audience, and as it is Samoa she ended up bumping and grinding with the surprised Marine as well as kissing him as she ran back to her seat. More highlights include the band asking if anyone likes a band (AC/DC, Journey, ZZTop) and the kids just started in silence each time they asked, as NONE of the had even heard of the bands! Rock doesn’t do too well here… However, even when the kids didn’t know the song that didn’t stop them from enjoying the moment, especially when kids would randomly get up and run on stage to dance with the band which resulted in confusion, knocking over some equipment, and spanking of Marines by minors. Hilarious to watch, just like most assemblies here.
And we missed first period! Score!
